Font Notes:
An entry in the 'Collections historical & archaeological relating to Montgomeryshire and its borders' (vol. xxv, 1891: 343-344) on Celtic bells quotes from the Proc. Ant. Scot. (vol. xiv, 1879-1880: 107) on the old bell at Insh, in Inverness-shire, noting that the bell "stands on the sill of a window in which there is a curious-shape hollow, which may have been the font of the early church. The slab which now forms the window-sole is of granite, and the basin-shaped hollow is 17 inches wide at the mouth, narrowing somewhat at the bottom, and 4 inches deep." Noted in Scotland Places, after the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland [www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/]: "The present church was erected in 1792. It possesses a very ancient cast-bronze bell, possibly dating from the time of St. Adamnan and a stone basin is set in one of the windows which was probably the font of the earliest church". [NB: from the previous descriptions it is unlikely that the object may have been a font, two shallow for an early font; perhaps a stoup or piscina?]
