Font Notes:
No individual entry found for Bishop's Cannings in the Domesday survey. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 7, 1953) notes: "The advowson of Bishop's Cannings church was considered as parcel of the foundation gift to Salisbury Cathedral of the Rectory manor of Cannings Canonicorum [...]. Thus since 1091 the dean and chapter have been the patrons of the living [...] The church of ST. MARY THE VIRGIN was built in the second half of the 12th century"; no font mentioned in it. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SU0376464173] notes: "Anglican parish church for former episcopal estate. Early to late C13, C14, C15, restored 1862-3 and 1883. [...] Mid C13 piscina at east end with bowl supported on twin columns. [...] Font: Late C15. Octagonal with quatrefoiled panels on short octagonal column, all raised over 2 steps." Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with a Tudor rose inscribed in a quatrefoil panel [NB: the west side of the font is blank, unfinished], with graded moulding on the upper level of the underbowl, the lower just a plain chamfer; raised on an octagonal stem, plain but for mouldings at each end; moulded lower base, also octagonal; octagonal plinth. The wooden cover has a flat octagonal platform on which are four thick scrolls rising to a finial. The basin well is lead lined. The font is in the Perpendicular style and, if of the period, probably 15th-century [the cover, though of Jacobean-style design is probably Victorian. Not mentioned in Pevsner & Cherry (1975) [on account of a late dating?]
