There is an entry for Alton [Priors] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU1162/alton-priors/] [accessed 22 July 2015], but it mentions neither cleric not church in it. The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 11, 1980) notes: "In the 12th century there were churches at East Overton, Fyfield, and Alton Priors. [...] The chancel arch survives from the 12th-century church. [...] restoration of the whole building was undertaken c. 1960 and c. 1976. [...] The church was declared redundant in 1973 and in 1977 was in the care of the Redundant Churches Fund." There is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this church. The present baptismal font consists of an octagonal basin with deeply carved quatrefoil panels on the sides, raised on a moulded octagonal pedestal. Octagonal wooden cover of low pyramidal shape; also modern. [NB: we have no information of the earlier font of this church]
