Allen (1839?) notes that "this church was rebuilt after the fire [of 1666] after the designs of sir Christopher Wren, and finished in 1695 […] At the west end is a handsome font of white marble, of a circular form, adorned with a shield of arms (a chevron engrailed, thereon three shells, in chief a lion passant guardant) and cherubs heads, and inscribed 'Ex dono Johannis Toolye, hujus tribus vicarii dignissimi 1699, necron vigilantissimi'". [NB: we have no information about the font(s) of the earlier church]
