Allen (1839?) notes that the original Allhallows on Lombart Street "is a very ancient foundation" mentioned in the "Monasticon Anglicanum in the year 1053 or 1054 […] The present building was erected in the room of that destroyed by the fire of London in 1666 [of which] Sir Christopher Wren was the architect […] The font is a polygonal basin of statuary marble, and is situated in a pew on the south side of the church". Blatch (1995) adds that "this is one of the few City churches whose recorded history is pre-Conquest" and describes the font: "The white marble font is a feature of much charm with a circlet of cherubs'heads and foliage around the rim. The cover, rather large by comparison, is richly decorated and capped with an endearing group of Charity with her children." [NB: neither author mentions the earlier font(s) of this church]
