Allen (1839?) notes that this church "is a very ancient foundation, formerly in the gift of the abbot and convent of Westminster; who (in 1237) gave it to king Henry III […] for the reception of converted Jews […] This church escaped the great fire in 1666, but has been repaired several times, at a very great expence […] The font is of recent construction : it is situated in a pew in a central area ; it is a large and handsome basin of white marble, sustained on a pillar." [NB: we have no information on the font of the medieval church here].
