No individual entry found for Llanrothal in the Domesday survey. The entry for this parish in An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in Herefordshire (vol. 1, South west, London, HMSO, 1931, pp. 171-173) notes: "Parish Church of St. John the Baptist [...] The N. wall of the Nave dates from the 12th century, but the rest of the building, including the Chancel, was re-built in the following century, probably on a larger scale. The South Porch was added probably in the 16th century. The bell-turret was added or re-built in 1680. The church was restored in 1921 [...] Stoup: In S. porch, semi-octagonal with tapering stem and round basin, 16th-century"; it mentions no font in it. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO4706618589] notes: "Former parish church, now partly roofless. C12 north wall to nave, remainder C13 with chancel and former north vestry restored C20"; no font mentioned in it. An object here is usually described as a baptismal font, but given its early date (12th-century Norman?) it would make more sense as a holy-water stoup, an argument reinforced by the presence of the raised cross on the usual position of the drain-hole [cf. infra]. The object consists of a small bucket-shaped basin raised on a moulded cylindrical pedestal base, a moulded circular lower base and a narrow octagonal plinth. Ross [www.britainexpress.com/counties/hereford/churches/Llanrothal/index.htm] [accessed 13 July 2008] illustrates the font and notes: ''The intriguing thing about the font is not the date, however, or the absence of decorative elements. It is, rather, the presence of a small, raised 'cross pattee' at the centre of the bowl […]. The cross pattee sits on a small, raised plug of carved stone, not unlike the drain plug of a modern bathtub.'' It should also be noted that the size of this basin and its shallow inner well are further arguments against identifying this object with a baptismal font.
