There is an entry of this Aughton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SE7038/aughton/] [accessed 14 July 2014], but it mentions neither church nor cleric in it. A font is noted in Glynne's visit of probably 1827 (in Butler, 2007): "The font is a very good Norman one of cylindrical form, with intersecting arches and shafts with square capitals; it is raised on two steps." Described in Sheahan & Whellan (1857): "The font is circular, with interlaced arches." In Pevsner & Neave (1995): "Drum-shaped, Norman, with tall, narrow arcading." NB: of the two octagonal steps the top appears medieval, the lower one is of a much later date.
