A font in this locality is mentioned in Davies (1811): "There was formely a Chapel at Alkmonton, but the font is the only present remains of it." Reported in Bagshaw (1846): "An ancient font was removed from Cockshut Croft, in 1844, into the chapel yard; near the ppace from which it was taken is the appearance of extensive buildings." White's Directory of 1857 [http://www.n.f.wilson.btinternet.co.uk/201-224.htm] [accessed 1 July 2008] has: "An ancient font was removed from Cockshut Croft in 1844, into the church-yard, and after the church was consecrated it was placed in the church. Near the place from which it was taken, are the remains of an ancient building, supposed to have been a church, dedicated io St. Alkmund." Kelly's Directory of 1891 notes: "the circular Norman font, the sculptures upon which have been destroyed, was dug up in Cockshut Croft in the course of excavations on Alkmonton Old Hall farm in this parish."
