There are two entries for Wickhamford [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP0641/wickhamford/] [accessed 4 November 2014], one of which reports a priest in it but not a church, though there probably was one there. Noake (1854) writes of two fonts in this church: "The font is wood, nicely carved, with the four Evangelists surrounding the shaft, and winged chrubs the basin. 'A Visitors Guide to St John the Baptist Church, Wickhamford' [http://www.stmichaelsbroadway.org/stjohns21.html] [accessed 29 June 2008] informs: "On the left as you enter the Chancel is the carved oak Font which was in use when Mr. Hunt came. On the cover is the Sandys griffin. It was another gift to the church from that family.' Again you see cherubs' heads and figures of saints. Like those on the pulpit and gallery front, they may have been 'collector's pieces' which the font was specially designed to display." Pevsner (1968) notes: "Font. With bits of C17 woodwork stuck on". Brooks & Pevsner (2007), however, write: "Remarkable C17 oak font, stem with applied figures of the Evangelists, bowl with winged cherubs; cover with the Sandys griffin." [NB: the griffin is the finial of the octagonal wooden cover]
