No entry found for either Rock or Ake in the Domesday survey or in Miller (1890). Noake (1868) reports "a curious circular font" in this church. The Victoria County History (Worcester, vol. 4, 1924) notes: "There was a priest, and possibly also a church, at Alton in 1086 [...] and Ralph de Toeni when granting the manor of Alton to the Abbot of St. Evroul gave it 'with its church.' [...] Mainard, Abbot of St. Evroul, when quoting this charter in 1292 in defence of his claim to Alton Woods, stated that it was a grant of 'Auvynton cum ecclesia de Hac,' [...] which seems to show that the church of Alton is identical with the present church of Rock, and not, as supposed by Habington [...] The nave and the western part of the chancel were built in the first half of the 12th century [...] The stone font dates from the 12th century, and has a circular bowl, the surface of which is enriched by formal foliated and strap ornament in low relief. The stem is composed of a central and four engaged shafts with scalloped capitals and moulded bases." [NB: the whole base is modern]. In Pevsner (1968): "Norman, cauldron-shaped, with nine rosettes connected with clasps. The font is similar to that at Bayton nearby". Brooks & Pevsner (2007) note additionally: "Base by [Frederick] Preedy". Zarnecki (1990) suggests the font may be the work of the Aston Master, responsible for the tympanum of the church at Aston. The entry for this church in Historic England [https://historicengland.org.uk/services-skills/grants/visit/st-peter-and-st-paul-rock-dy14-9st/] [accessed 12 January 2019] notes: "Large Norman parish church. The nave and chancel were built c1150 with a large tower and south aisle added c1510. 19th century restorations by F Preedy. Contains notable examples of Norman features, especially the highly decorated chancel arch"; no font mentioned in this entry.
Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2014): "The motifs on the font are similar to some on the chancel arch (second order, E side), and the font at nearby Bayton bears carving in a similar style."
