Font Notes:
No entry found in the Domesday survey for Shrawley. Miller (1890) notes: "There are many decided Norman features in this church, notably the two Norman doorways", but does not mention a font in it. Noake (1848) writes: "The baptismal font, which has been removed from near the entrance door and placed in a convenient recess on the other side, consists of a circular bason on an octangular base: it is a remarkably good specimen of the transition from the Norman to the Early English style." The Victoria County History (Worcester, vol. 4, 1924) notes: "The chancel dates from about the year 1100, but the nave, which is not on the same axis, appears to have been built at a somewhat later date, while the south doorway of the nave is an insertion of about 1170. [...] The font has a white sandstone circular bowl and short circular shaft of the early 12th century, and a red sandstone octagonal base of a later date. The upper part of the bowl is enriched by a scalloped band and the lower edge with a hollow moulding". There is no mention of this font in Pevsner (1968). The Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture in Britain and Ireland (1992) notes: "The bowl of the font could be a reused main arcade capital" [NB: by the look of the lower base block it is quite possible it is itself a basin from an old font]. Brooks & Pevsner (2007) suggest "the trumpet scallops of its bowl look re-cut", and note a "plain C17 cover" on the font. [cf.
