error font? -- An April 2007 photograph by Tina Manthorpe, captioned "Bacton font", in FLICKR [http://www.flickr.com/photos/84265607@N00/468386012/in/pool-68878292@N00] [accessed 12 April 2008] shows a round font of tapering decorated sides and raised on a plain lower base and a round plinth with kneeling stone; the basin proper is decorated with a very well rendered interlace featuring linking twirls of broad bead-tape, with foliage in the spandrels formed by the ondulating patterns; there are two prominent mouldings at the centre ring level; the upper is a rope moulding, the lower is a two-strand braid; below these, large foliage motifs that match the smaller ones in the basin spandrels. It is possible that the upper rim of the basin may have been re-tooled, perhaps to hide the damage to it? The twirl pattern has been smoothed or filed off to wane at the upper end, not a common finish in Norman decorative patterns]. [NB: we have not been able to trace this 'Bacton' to any existing churches in Britain. The tag 'Worcestershire' is part of the metadata of the entry, but we cannot locate a Bacton in that county; the Bacton in Hereford & Worcester [formerly Herefordshire], does not correspond to this font, although the carving style would fit in the Herefordshire-style -- cf. Index entry for Bacton St. Fatih's -- Could it be a labelling error in FLICKR? -- to be completed]
