There is an entry for Shepton [Beauchamp] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST4017/shepton-beauchamp/] [accessed 27 February 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Wade & Wade (1929) report an ancient font in this church. Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 4, 1978) notes: "The church was first mentioned in 1243 and the benefice was a rectory by 1254 [...] No part of the fabric can be ascribed with certainty to a date before the end of the 13th century, but it is probable that the nave preserves the outline of the building which then existed"; there is no font mentioned in the VCH entry. The National Monuments Record [http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/details/default.aspx?id=428473] [accessed 28 September 2009] notes: "Norman tub font with C19 medieval style cover with ironwork."
