There is an entry for Pawlett [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST3042/pawlett/] [accessed 10 April 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Wade & Wade (1929) report "a tub font (on a later base)" in this church. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 6, 1992) notes: "The church was a dependent chapelry of North Petherton minster [...] Pawlett evidently achieved virtual independence in the 12th century and Robert FitzHarding [...] gave the church to St. Augustine's abbey, Bristol, probably at its foundation c. 1140 [...] The font was reconstituted from one of the 12th century and an octagonal font cover with lockable doors was provided in the 17th century". There are some local claims that the bottom section of the font may be Saxon, but there is nothing specifically 'Saxon' about that section of the font; it does, however, look like the nicely decorated basin of an early font re-used as base for the plain Norman basin. Pevsner (1958) mentions the font cover but not the font itself.
