Wade & Wade (1929) report a "Norm[an] font carved with a curious device by some later craftsman" in this church. Described in Pevsner (1958): "Circular on circular stem. With close early C16 tracery on the bowl and small naïvely carved demi-figures." English Heritage
[Listing NGR: ST5328360400] (1960) notes: "font in nave has circular bowl on circular stem, close early C16 tracery on the bowl and small naively-carved demi-figures, fined carved polygonal wooden cover" [after Pevsner (1958)]. The font consists of a tub-shaped basin mounted on a cylindrical pedestal base; the carving showing on the sides of the basin does indeed look 'curious', a fanciful arcade filled with tracery and human heads, as noted above, none of it Norman, but the original shape of the font is consistent with its Romanesque claim. The wooden cover, in the shape if a polygonal [decagonal? / dodecagonal?] pyramid appears old, perhaps 17th century?
