Scene Description: Source caption: "St Peter's church in Bridge Street was originally a dependent chapel of St Decuman's, Watchet and dedicated to All Saints. It was largely rebuilt in the 19th century, and is Grade II* listed. It may not be the most spectacular church, but had a simple charm and was well used."

There is an entry for Williton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST0741/williton/] [accessed 2 April 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Kelly's Directory of 1883 and Wade & Wade (1929) report a stone font dated 1666. in this church. The entry for St. Decumans in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 5, 1985) notes: "Before 1202 Robert FitzUrse granted his right in the advowson of Williton chapel to the church of St. Decuman. [...] The chapel, which had a resident chaplain, had no burial ground, and attendance at the mother church was required at festivals, [...] The church, formerly the chapel, of ST. PETER was dedicated by the early 14th century to All Saints [...] The building was heavily restored and the north aisle and vestry added in 1856–9 by C. E. Giles [...] The alabaster font was bought in 1666". The Quantock Online Community website [http://www.quantockonline.co.uk/quantocks/villages/williton/williton01.html] [accessed 18 March 2008] notes: "During the civil war the font was damaged by vandals and the present octagonal font, dated 1666, was made from local alabaster from the cliffs at Watchet to replace it. The initials on the font are throught to be the initials of the church wardens “RW and RP”. The alabaster font has suffered too: the basin is badly cracked and a part of stem is also damaged.
