Scene Description: Source caption: "The Church of St. Nicholas in Kilton, near Stogursey, Bridgwater, Somerset was decommissioned by the Church of England in 2004. It was then bought by a private individual, lovingly restored, and brought back into use as a non-denominational wayfarer's church. Highlights are probably the the 19th Century Reredos and 14th Century Font but the church has much to offer."

There is an entry for this Kilton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST1644/kilton/] [accessed 6 March 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church here. Kelly's Directory of 1883 reports an "old stone font" in this church. Described in Wade & Wade (1929) as "a good Perp[endicular] font". In Pevsner (1958), as Perpendicular. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 5, 1985) notes: "Between 1090 and 1100 William de Mohun (I) gave the tithes of Kilton to the monastery of Bath [...] The lower parts of the tower and the chancel arch are of the 14th century and the plan of the nave and chancel is of that date or earlier [...] t was extensively restored and partially rebuilt by John Norton between 1861 and 1864 [...] The ornate late-medieval font retains traces of colour;" a foot note [203] in the VCH entry reads: " Font and canopy repainted 1635–6: S.R.O., D/P/kln 4/1/1." Noted in the Open Churches Trust [http://www.openchurchestrust.org.uk/Churches/Kilton.htm] [accessed 16 March 2008] as a 14th-century font. Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with floral motifs inscribed in pointed quatrefoils; tall underbowl chamfer with angels at the angles; octagonal stem with traceried (?) sides; moulded lower base. The wooden cover is round and plain; modern.
