Wade & Wade (1929) report: "an ancient Norm[an] font with double mouldings". Described in Pevsner (1958): "Norman, circular, with a frieze of saltire crosses at the top and a cable-moulding at the bottom of the bowl." Noted and illustrated in the village website [http://www.fivehead-village.org.uk/st__martin's.htm] [accessed 16 March 2008]: "The font is Norman, dating from the second half of the 12th century." The font consists of a cylindrical basin decorated with two bands of motif: around the upper basin side is a pattern of saltire-in-a-rectangle; around the lower rim is a thick rope moulding; it is raised on a plain cylindrical stem and a square lower base, the whole on a narrow square plinth. The wooden cover is round and flat, with a raised cross motif and squat knob handle; appears modern.
