There is an entry for Combe [St Nicholas] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST3011/combe-st-nicholas/] [accessed 28 November 2017], but it mentions neither priest nor church in it. Wade & Wade (1929) report that "two ancient fonts are kept in the W. end of the church". The 'History of the Parish Church of St. Nicholas' [http://www.combestnicholas.org.uk/about_the_parish/churchhistory.htm] [accessed 12 March 2008] provides a description and illustration of both fonts: "A sandstone font, probably pre-Conquest, may be found near the south door [...] It is a circular monolithic hollowed stone bowl with a large circular drain. The top is badly worn, apparently by knife sharpening. [...] At the east end of the north aisle is a 15th century carved stone font on a 20th century plain octagonal base" [actually, a plinth]. [NB: a note (e-mail of 17 March 2008) received from the Parish adds: "The older font, probably Saxon, was thrown out of the church during restoration work at the end of the 19thC, but was rescued".] Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958).
