There is en entry for Charlton [Adam] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST5328/charlton-adam/] [accessed 6 February 2018]; the lords in 1066 are reported to be "cleric, one; thanes, three", but no church is mentioned in it. Drawing of a font in the Harvey Pridham Drawings of English Fonts (MS 56). [Folder Number, Item Description]. University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries. Special Collections Dept., done by Harvey Pridham in July 1888 accompanied by the following description: "All circular. Poor work, irregular and chipped. Circular bowl inside, lead lined, 9 3/4 deep, with 3" margin: position, under open West Tower Arch. Jae. cover." Wade & Wade (1929) mention a Norman font in this church. Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 3, 1974) remarks aboujt the presence of a cleric here in 1066, " although the church of Charlton Adam is not mentioned until between 1142 and 1166 [...] The building comprises chancel, nave, south transeptal chapel, south porch, and west tower. It dates from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries [...] The font, with round bowl and shaft, is c. 1200". The basin is plain but for a moulding on the underbowl; there is some damage to one of the sides of the upper rim; the circular stem also has a moulding at its lower end; the lower base is wider and moulded. The wooden cover is round and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle; modern.
