There is an entry for Charlinch [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST2337/charlinch/] [accessed 4 April 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Wade & Wade (1929) report a Norman font in this church. Described in Pevsner (1958): "Norman. Circular, fluted." Noted in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 6, 1992) :"12th-century font and a cover made in 1622". [NB: the VCH further notes: "The last public service was held in the church in 1981 [...] and the building was then declared redundant. It was sold for conversion to a house" [entry footnoted: "Bridgewater Mercury, 21 May 1986"]. The church is listed (Grade I) in the National Monuments Record (English Heritage) [http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/details/default.aspx?id=269403] [accessed 9 March 2008]. The entry for this church in the CRSBI (2018) notes: "The S doorway, chancel arch responds and font are 12thc work. [...] the font has been removed to a private address which cannot be supplied -- Now at a private address. The bowl (without lead) is separated from the rest, and approximately a quarter of it is broken & placed inside the larger part. The bowl appears to have been cut at some distant time (perhaps to enable it to fit against a wall), so that approximately ¾ of the lower fluting is missing from a substantial section. The bowl was originally curved and fluted with, at its bottom, a shallow cylindrical section matching the stem. The cylindrical stem consists of five blocks, and at its top is a shallow torus. The base consists of a simple cylinder with its upper edge chamfered into the stem." [NB: it is od that the CRSBI describes this font as "12th work", as the pattern of concave ribs or flutes hints at a much later date]. [NB: the diocesan office reply [e-mail of 11 March 2008] to our request for information: "Our records show that the font went to the churchyard of the nearby church of Nether Stowey, but they do not make it clear whether this included the font cover also."]
