There are two entries for Buckland [St Mary] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST2713/buckland-st-mary/] [accessed 3 June 2015], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Wade & Wade (1929) report: "The wooden cover of the font is said to be all that remains of the former church." The website of the Parish of Buckland St. Mary [www.buckland-st-mary.co.uk/church_history.htm] [accessed 9 March 2008] informs: "The foundation stone of the Church was laid in the summer of 1853, on the site of the old church, probably erected in new Tudor times. There had been a Norman church on the site, of which no records exist", and adds: "Mr Davis was the builder who oversaw the works and he presented the Font. It[s] carved oak canopy is made of wood taken from the old church, which had probably been in that church since its erection some 350 years before. This could therefore be said to be the oldest part of the present church." [NB: we have no information on either of the two (?) previous fonts of this church]
