Described in Wade & Wade (1929): "15th-cent. hexagonal font with six figures (seemingly of apostles) at the angles". Described in Pevsner (1958): "Octagonal, Perp[endicular]. On each side a small figure flanked by slim panels l[eft] to r[ight]." Illustrated in 'Discovering Somerset' [http://members.lycos.co.uk/dbown100/broadwayAlbum101.jpg [accessed 2 March 2008]. The font consists of a hexagonal basin decorated with 18 gothic arches, three per side; the centre arch is ponted and contains a human figure regardant and holding an object (one of them holds a sword); are the Apostles?; to either side of the figure are trefoil arches, each containing a shield; the shields appear to be blank, but may have been painted in the past; there is some foliage in the spandrel-like spaces at the bottom of the arches; the central shaft of the base has an upper rol moulding; the outer colonnettes have floral motives on the outer sides; the base consists of a central shaft and four outer colonnottes; the shafts and bases of the colonnettes, as well as the lower base, appear modern replacements; the plinth may be original. Wooden cover made of graded mouldings and topped with a large cross; appears modern.
