There is an entry for Compton [Dando] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST6464/compton-dando/] [accessed 7 May 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Wade and Wade (1929) report a "Norm[an] font" in this church. The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: ST6456664655] (1956) has: "Pulpit and font of 1883"]. The present font in the Church of St. Mary is a square cushion-capital type, modern in appearance; this may be due to a total and drastic re-carving of the older font, and the addition of a new cylindrical stem, and quadrangular lower base and plinth; the lead lining is also modern.
