Described in Rutter (1829): "The font is plain, circular, and massive." Described in the National Gazetteer of 1868 as "a font of great antiquity". Kelly's Directory of 1883 reports "a curious old font, on a pedestal, which is said to be Early Saxon". Described in Pevsner (1958): " Circular bowl on circular base with four attched demi-shatfs. The neck a triple moulding. What is the date?" The font consists now of two ill-matched parts: the upper half is made up of a hemispherical basin with the upper half of the stem and central ring attached, and the lower half, a square pillar with widely chamfered angles; all of it is raised on a quadrangular plainth. The overhang of the new lead lining of the basin appears to cover a damaged rim. It is unlikely that the pedestal was the original support of the font.
