Font Notes:
There is an entry for Copmanthorpe [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SE5646/copmanthorpe/] [accessed 1 November 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Copmanthorpe Story [http://s204138798.websitehome.co.uk/Companthorpe/copmanthorpeparishcouncil.org.uk/WP-CMS/copmanthorpe-story.pdf] [accessed 27 January 2008] notes: "A plan of 1868 showed a gallery with stairs on the north side and the vestry in the south west corner... Another Enlargement Plan showed the Font in the south west corner". Rita Wood [communication to BSI of 27 January 2008 -- cf. BSI print archive] writes: "The fragment which looks very much like a font [...] is outside the church near the path at present. A vicar in 1868 reported that 'the font (which I found in ruins) - has been restored'. The present font is Victorian on a pseudo-Norman pillar and plinth, no original material in it [...] The fragment is a shallow irregular cylinder, not so very different from others of the 12th century that I have seen in the East Riding, for example at Argam and Hunmanby. It is set on its broken side in the soil, about 2/3 of the circumference showing. There is an irregular drainage hole in the bottom agains the inner angle of the basin, not the usual place" [the note includes also useful measurements of the fragment]. The modern font consists of an octagonal basin with chamfered sides, raised on a cylindrical pedestal base. The font cover consists of a flat and plain octagonal wooden base with a modern metal rendition of the old Jacobean raised scrolls. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE5652146875] notes: "Church. C12 much altered with chancel of 1889 and C20 additions including west porch" but it mentions no font in it. Not in Harman & Pevsner (2017). The entry for this church in the CRSBI (2018) reports: "There is a large fragment of a plain stone basin of unknown date beside the path to the W door. A drainage hole is to one side." [NB; report author Rita Wood, cf. supra].
