There is an entry for this Stowell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST6822/stowell/] [accessed 21 October 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. There is no mention of this font in Phelps (1836). Wade & Wade (1929) report a Norman font in this church. The Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 7, 1999), however, notes: "A rector was mentioned in 1272 but the advowson was recorded in the early 13th century. [...] The church of ST. MARY MAGDALENE, so dedicated by 1545 [...] The oldest part of the church is the 14th-century base of the tower. [...] The font may date from the 13th century". Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958).
