Font Notes:
There is an entry for Westbury [-on-Severn] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SO7114/westbury-on-severn/] [accessed 1 February 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 10, 1972) notes: "No part of the church which stood on the site by the 11th century [...] apparently survives; presumably it lacked a tower and the detached tower and spire were built in the late 13th century, the body of the church being rebuilt in the 14th century. [...] The pedestal of the font, carved with the royal arms and other devices, is dated 1583; the bowl is not original"; the VCH entry is footnoted "The bowl is said to have been destroyed before 1858 when the pedestal was removed to a garden at Flaxley where it remained until 1888: Trans. B.G.A.S. xlvii. 169- 171". Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Font of c. 1862.-- An earlier font has an ancient-looking octagonal bowl resting on an interesting pedestal carved with the arms of Elizabeth I and the date 1583." The pedestal base has the arms of Elizabeth I, plus a number of emblems related to the House of Tudor: two portcullis, a crowned Tudor rose, two fleurs-de-lis, and two inscriptions: "ANDO" and "1583". The later baptismal font consists of an octagonal basin with rounded sides and underbowl, raised on an octagonal pedestal base; there is a tow of small ball-flower motif under the upper rim of the basin; the sides of the latter are adorned with symbols inserts; the pedestal base is decorated with a blind arcade of trefoiled arches. Tall pyramidal wooden cover decorated with vegetal motifs (foliage and floral).
