Noake (1848) writes: "The font bears [the] date 1634; it stands six feet high, being approached by steps; the lid is surmounted with a dove, the emblem of the Holy Spiri,t as also of Christian purity. The cup of the font is large enough for total immersion. but a small metal basin deposited there shows that the rite is not performed in its full extent and significance." Dent (1877) notes and illustrates the font and cover but gives the date on it as "1635" [NB: it is actually 1634]; Dent (ibid.) quotes from an entry in the parish registers which records: "Nov. 1764. Paid for the Dove on the Font, 6s."] Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Font. Octagonal stone pedestal dated 1634, with ornament typical of its date. The bowl is a late 17thC replacement, but the pretty original cover has survived." A different cover is on the font in a post-card that appears to be dated in the 1910s; the cover on the font consists of an octagonal moulded base with eight scroll ribs ending in a finial with two foliated motifs.
