Font Notes:
There is an entry wor this Winstone [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SO9609/winstone/] [accessed 15 February 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 11, 1976) notes: "Architectural evidence shows that there was a church at Winstone by the mid 11th century [...] The nave dates from the later 11th century and retains its north and south doorways and chancel arch [...] the font, an octagonal bowl decorated with quatrefoils resting on an octagonal base, is of the 15th century." Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Font. Perp[endicular], octagonal, of the usual type." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO9655609373] notes: "Parish church. Mid or late C11; C14 south porch; C15 tower; vestry added and chancel rebuilt in 1876 [...] C15 octagonal stone font with quatrefoil to each face and octagonal moulded pedestal. The north and south doorways, and the chancel arch suggest a pre-conquest origin for this church." The octagonal baptismal font the sides of which are decorated with floral motifs inscribed in octafoil panels may have been re-tooled at the time of the 19th-century restoration of the church [NB: we have no information on the font of the 11th-century church here.]
