There are two entries for Whitsseley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL2697/whittlesey/] [accessed 18 April 2016], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. The Victoria County History (Cambridge and the Isle of Ely, vol. 4, 2002) notes: "St. Mary's, the church of the Thorney manor, was from an early date appropriated to the monastic kitchen. [...] Its value was £13 6s. 8d. in 1217 [...] The two churches stand less than a quarter of a mile apart, and from 1570 to 1815 were served by the same incumbent. [...] St. Mary's was reckoned the senior church [...] The font is modern and poor". [NB: according to the VCH (ibid.) the original church goes back to the mid-13th century, but we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church]
