There is an entry for this Sutton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL4478/sutton/] [accessed 25 April 2016], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Cambridge..., vol. 4: 2002) notes: "The church was early appropriated to the hosteller of Ely monastery-an arrangement which Bishops Northwold (1254) [...] and Balsham (1276) [...] confirmed. [...] The fabric [of the present building] dates from the second half of the 14th century, and exhibits the transition from Decorated to Perpendicular. [...] The plain octagonal font is probably of late 14th century date; beneath the bowl there are conventional flowers carved in relief." Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with odd-looking veritcal sides in combination with a deeply-carved band of floral motif around the underbowl, perhaps an indication that the font may have been re-cut; the octagonal pedestal base and the plinth are modern, as is the lead lining of the basin well.
