The Gentleman's Magazine (vol. 42 NS (July-Dec 1854): 60): "The Rev. W. Staunton described a curious object of stone, in form of a diminutive Norman font, the upper part sculptured with grotesque heads. He stated that it had been found at Kenilworth Castle in a singular manner, when preparations were made there for a horticultural display in 1848. The purpose of this relic, contemporary probably with the foundation of the castle by Geoffry de Clinton, in the reign of Henry I. [i.e., 1100-1135], remains unknown. Some had supposed it to have been used as a cresset, or lamp. It measures only eight inches in height." [NB: we have not been able to find any other reference to this object]
