Noted and illustrated in Upcott (1818). The editor of The Gentleman's Magazine (July-Dec. 1841) provides an illustration that "is copied from a drawing by Mr. Flower, of Leicester, of an ancient Font, which was a few years ago used as a water-trough in a field near Barkby, in Leicestershire. It is now removed, and we have not been able to ascertain what has become of it; but as a relic which scaped the notice of Mr. Nichols [sic] in his History of Leicesterhsire, we have thought it deserving of commemoration. We should be glad to receive some account of the armorial shields." The illustration shows a stone basin of octagonal shape, with charged shields on alternate sides, the others with carved abutting motifs resembling upturned blank shields; the basin has damage to the upper rim and a hole drilled into one of the shield sides, below the actual shield; the context is, as indicated in the text above, a farm.
