There are two entries for Asfordby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK7019/asfordby/] [accessed 24 July 2015], one of which mentions a priest, but not a church, in it, though there probably was one there. A font here is noted and illustrated in Upcott (1818). Pemberton (1984-1985) reports that archdeacon James Bickman includes the font at Asfordby as one of three that were reported in 1773- 1779 as being in a very poor condition and in need of painting, a new cover, and replacing with a 'bason'; the painting recommended was apparently done using a stone-colored oil; the 'basons' became a controversial issue as some critics deplored the use of them instead of 'proper' fonts. The present font appears modern, an octagonal basin with plain tapering sides on a cluster of constructional columns. [NB: the Leicestershire Parish Councils web site notes that there are remains of earlier periods of this church, back to the Norman period; there probably was a church here in 1086 [cf. supra], but we have no other information on the font(s) of this church].
