There are two entries for this Wistow [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP6495/wistow/] [accessed 28 August 2015], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. A font is noted and illustrated in Upcott (1818). The Victoria County History (Leicestershire, vol. 5, 1964) notes: "No priest was mentioned in Wistow in 1086, but the priest who held land at Newton Harcourt may have been the Rector of Wistow [...] The present structure, which dates from the 12th century, was enlarged c. 1300, again altered in the 14th and 15th centuries, and remodelled in the 18th century. [...] The vestry houses the 18th-century font, now disused. In 1798 the discarded medieval font was used in the churchyard to catch rainwater" [the VCH footnotes this entry: "Nichols, Leics. ii, 872 and plate cxxxix fig. 1" [to be completed]]. [NB: we have no other information on the earlier font of this church].
