Font Notes:
There is an entry for [Bessels] Leigh [variant spelling] int the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP4501/bessels-leigh/] [accessed 2 June 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4, 2011) notes: "A church consisting of a nave and chancel existed here in the 12th century [...] the church appears to have been considerably altered and perhaps lengthened in the 13th century [...] In 1632 the building was restored [...] The stone font has a rusticated cylindrical stem and a circular bowl enriched with swags of foliage, and is perhaps local work of the 18th century, but may be earlier." Noted with a photograph in Oxfordshire Church Illustrations, in Flickr [http://flickr.com/photos/oxfordshire_church_photos/1354535991/] [accesed 15 September 2007]: "The mid C17 rustic English Baroque font is an attractive feature and is to the west of the south door below a small gallery beneath the bells." The CRSBI (2015) reports a Romanesque pillar piscina of the 12th century in this church. [NB: we do not have any information on the medieval font here].
