There are two entries for Barcheston [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP2639/barcheston/] [accessed 19 December 2014], neither of of which mentions cleric or church in it. Hilary L. Turner web-site hsitory of Barcheston [www.barchestonhistory.info/church.html] [accessed 19 December 2014] reports "Two drawings, said to be by John Buckler dated June 1823, show the east end and the font" [British Library, Add Ms 36390, f. 38, 39] . The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 5, 1949) notes: "Although small the church is one of the more interesting in this district. [...] The nave and chancel date from c. 1190–1200, but there was probably an earlier nave on the site. A north aisle was added about 1220, with the arcade of three bays [...] priests' [i.e., chancel] doorway of c. 1190–1200 [...] south doorway, of c. 1190–1200, apparently in situ and similar to, but more elaborate than, the chancel doorway [cf. supra] The font is octagonal and of early-14th-century date. The bowl has a moulded top edge and the sides are panelled saltire-wise with quatrefoils and half-quatrefoils. The hollowed under-side is enriched at the angles with human-head carvings, including a king and two bishops, and between them are large ball-flowers. The stem also has trefoiled panels and the moulded base is carved with ball-flower ornament. English Heritage (1966) notes: "Church. C12/early C13 in origin with C14 additions of the north-west tower and south aisle. Alterations in C17 and restored 1870 and 1894. [...] Octagonal font with plinth with ball flower, traceried stem and bowl with head decoration." The entry in Warwickshire Churches [http://warwickshirechurches.weebly.com/barcheston---st-martin.html] [accessed 19 December 2014] reports: "The furnishings are not old with the exception of the fine 14th century font, carved with heads and ballflower ornament, which vividly illustrates the problems this church faces from damp by being virtually green with algae." Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with large saltire-like motifs, one on each panel, below a protruding round moulding at the upper rim; on the flat underbowl human (?) heads and ball-flower (?) motifs have been deeply carved, much as they appear on the font at Wootton Wawen, also in Warwickshire, for example; the pedestal base somewhat resembles one of the monolithic fonts of the carved Decorated period (Poynings, Bloxham, etc.); the lower end of the base, however, is octagonal at the top and widely splayed, the upper side decorated with pebble like pattern, the lower end sloping, plain, and then square. The font appears greenish, probably from excess humidity and moss. [NB: the font is visible in a photograph in Flicker, with original from Oxfordshire Church Illustrations [http://flickr.com/photos/oxfordshire_church_photos/461476051/] [accessed 23 July 2007]
