Noted in the 'Roma SPQR' website [http://www.romaspqr.it/ROMA/Basiliche/S-Maria-maggiore.htm] [accessed 14 July 2007]: "il Battistero risalente al 1605 ed opera di Flaminio Ponzio: una balaustra ne cinge il fonte battesimale posto al centro di un catino, nel 1800 Valladier divise in otto spicchi di bronzo un’urna circolare; questa suddivisione vuole rappresentare l’unione fra la terra ed il cielo; una volta questo spazio era occupato dal coro invernale dei canonici. La vasca è sovrastata da una statua di San Giovanni Battista." Noted in Antonia Bonomi [http://www.arcobaleno.net/costume/smariamag2.htm] [accessed 14 July 2007]: "il fonte battesimale, un'urna circolare di porfido adattata nel 1800 dal Valadier che la fece ricoprire di bronzi che lo dividono in otto spicchi, un ottagono. Il cerchio dell'urna e l'ottagono interno rappresentano la quadratura del cerchio, l'unione fra la terra e il cielo ".
