Font Notes:
Noted in Gardner's Gazetteer (1852) [www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp] [accessed 30 June 2007]: "A neat font was presented by Mr. Richard Finch, who died in 1802." The Victoria County History (Oxford, vol. 5, 1957) notes: "The first record of the church of St. Andrew is Henry I's charter to the canons of St. Frideswide in 1122 granting them a chapel at Headington [...] but this charter may have been by way of confirmation, for the older foundation of St. Frideswide seems to have enjoyed tithes of the manor in Ethelred's time. [...] the earlier existence of the Headington peculiar must be assumed. [...] The chancel [...] was built of local stone about the middle of the 12th century." There is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this parish. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font of this church; was it discarded ca. 1802 when the modern replacement font was installed?].
