There is an entry for Coln [St Aldwyns] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP1405/coln-st-aldwyns/] [accessed 21 December 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The National Gazetteer of 1868 reports that this church is originally Norman, with Early English and Perpendicular additions/changes, but the present font appears to be mid-19th century, probably contemporary with the restoration of 1853. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 7, 1981) notes: "A grant of tithes at Coln St. Aldwyns to Gloucester Abbey in 1100 [...] suggests the existence of a church there but no record of it has been found before the later 12th century [...] The parish church was called St. Athelwine's in the later 12th century [...] but the dedication was changed after 1535 (fn. 350) and before the beginning of the 18th century to ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST"; the VCH entry mentions no font in it. Verey & Brooks (1999-2002) write: "Font. Probably of 1853. Inscribed on the step a Greek palindrome." The new font consists of an octagonal basin decorated with tracery panels and raised on an octagonal pedestal base, the whole on a two-step plinth; on the upper surface of the second step of the plinth is the Greek palindrome: "ΝΙΨΟΝ ΑΝΟΜΗΜΑ ΜΗ ΜΟΝΑΝ ΟΨΙΝ" [Wash away my sins, wash not my face only]. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church].
