Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Elmstone [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SO9226/elmstone/] [accessed 31 January 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 8, 1968) notes: "The church was built by the 12th century [...] A sculptured stone with a Saxon spiral pattern similar to the pattern on the font at Deerhurst stands in the west end of the church. It has been suggested that it was the base of the Deerhurst font, but from its shape it is more likely to have been the base of a cross. [...] The 15thcentury font has an octagonal bowl with ornamented panels." Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Font. C15, octagonal. The bowl has quatrefoil panels with centres of four-leaf flowers and roses. Similar decoration on the chamfer; stem with ogee trefoil-headed panels. C18 cover. The wooden cover is octagonal, with finial/handle. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font of this church]
