There are four entries for Claxton [varian spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG3203/claxton/] [accessed 28 February 20144, one of which includes a church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The church is dedicated to St. Andrew, and was appropriated to the priory of Bliburgh, to which it was probably given by William de Cheyney, lord of this town in the reign of Henry II. valued at eleven marks, and a vicarage was appointed; the patronage of it was in the said priory," The present font is noted in Billett (2006): "Four lions support the sturdy stem of the fifteenth-century octagonal font, which stands on a small pedestal. Four of the panels depict carved shields, including the saltire cross [...], the instruments of the passion, an emblem of the trinity and two lions and flowers." Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "C15. Octagonal. Four lions against the stem, four shields (emblem of the Trinity, Instruments of the Passion, a lion and St Andrew's Cross, two lions and two flowers)." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2005): "15th century font, very similar to that at Wheatacre". The flowers on the basin sides are Turdor roses; the frames of the panels themselves have little rosette motifs all around; angels heads at the underbowl angles; buttresses between the lions of the base. Small octagonal plinth. Round and flat wooden cover.
