Font Notes:
There are three entries for Banningham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TG2129/banningham/] [accessed 13 September 2015], none of which mention cleric or priest in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The tower is square, and hath three bells [...] The south porch, nave, and two isles are leaded, and the chancel is thatched [...] n this church, which is dedicated to St. Botholph", and names "Sir Hugh de Bolle" as first recorded rector, in 1316. The font cover, not the font, is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Font cover. Thin, C18, with attenuated Tuscan columns and ogee cap." The font itself consists of a plain octagonal basin that, to judge by its plain design and irregular shape, could well be medieval [notwithstanding Bond's (1908) warning about assigning undue age to crude works]; the octagonal stem, by contrast, has decorated trefoiled panels, and the narrow splaying lower base is plain but regularly cut; the same can be said of the octagonal plinth. The font cover [cf. supra] is ocatagonal, of the bird-cage design, with a covered-cup finial; the eight slender colonnettes are round, with moulded round-to-square capitals and bases.
