There are two entries for this locality in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG0136/bale/] [accessed 16 January 2014], but neithre includes a church or cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is a rectory, dedicated to All-Saints [...] The nave is covered with lead, the chancel with tiles, and has a square tower and 4 bells." The earliest reference to this church in Blomefield (ibid.) appears to be 1303, when "Vincent de Norton" was instituted as rector, "presented by Sir Ralph de Nugun, Knt." Farrer (1887 [1885?]) describes the shields on the font: "V. A cross, St. George. -- VI. A cross surmounted of a crown of thorns, in saltire a spear and reed with sponge, on the dexter side a three-lashed scourge, and on the sinister the cup of Vinegar, Shield of the Passion. -- VII. Emblem of the Trinity." Noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Font. C15. Octagonal with the Instruments of the Passion, four flower panels, etc., all severely recut." The octagonal basin has now a thin round moulding at the upper rim, and the same moulding frames the eight panels of the re-cut sides, the Instruments of the Passion emblems on shields; new angels at the angles of the underbowl chamfer; plain octagonal stem with moulded minimal lower base; plain octagonal plinth with kneeling stone. Flat octagonal wooden cover; appears modern. Illustrated in Knott (2004).
