No individual entry found for Quedgeley in the Domesday survey. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 10, 1972) notes: "The plain cylindrical lead font, perhaps of the 12th century, has been encased in an octagonal stone font with mosaic panels" [footnoted to "Trans. B.G.A.S. xxxviii. 187"]. Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Big octagonal font faced with trefoil-headed panels of encaustic tile". The parish web site [www.wuedgeleychurch.org.uk] informs: "The font is a cylindrical 12th Century font encased in an octagonal ashlared casing with panels of gold and coloured tessarae, including blue forest stone. This was given by Revd Winstone Hayward for the re-opening of the Church in 1857." [NB: the following appeared in 'This is Gloucestershire' [on-line issue of 20 September 2008]: "QUEDGELEY Church now has a beautiful new font thanks to master-craftsman Ian Pearce, a regular member of Quedgeley Church, who designed and made it especially for us. Everyone is grateful to Ian for the lovely font which was dedicated by the Rector during last Sunday's morning service. From now on Baptisms will take place in the front of the church rather than tucked away at the back. It also marks another step towards the next stage of re-ordering the church building. The old Victorian font is to be removed, leaving a nice big space at the entrance of the church."] The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO8071614182] notes: "Parish church. C14; heavily restored and rebuilt 1857 [...] further alterations c1890 [...] Cl9 octagonal stone font below tower with coloured stone inlay; contains cylindrical lead font" [NB: is it a lead font, an insert or a lining?].
