The entry for Fretherne and Saul in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 10, 1972) notes: "Saul church was at one time a chapel of Standish. In the mid 13th century it was said that some 200 years earlier the tithes of the fishery at Framilode were given to the parish church of Saul. (fn. 78) Saul may therefore have originally been independent of Standish church, becoming subject to it because both Saul and Standish belonged to Gloucester Abbey. [...] There is a tub-shaped 12th-century font, greatly cut down and standing on a modern pillar" [the VCH information on the font is footnoted: "Trans. B.G.A.S. xlix. 134-5, 154"]. Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Font. Norman tub-shaped bowl, probably cut down, with moulded top and circular C18 shaft." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO7491109320] notes: "Anglican parish church. Said to date from 1140, part of chancel possibly C14, tower and nave windows Perpendicular of late C15/early C16. Altered and enlarged in 1856 and restored 1863-5 [...] Norman font." The basin shows a double moulding at the upper rim but is otherwise plain, as the lower roll moulding appears to be part of the modern base. Octagonal wooden cover with finial.
