Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Oldbury [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SO9812/oldbury/] [accessed 17 May 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. An entry on this font appears in the 'Gloucestershire Notes and Queries (1891-1893). Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "sturdy font, said to be a replica of the Transitional Norman one destroyed by the fire in 1897." The Severn Beach web site [www.severnbeach.com/southglos/st_arilda_church.htm] [accessed 22 March 2007] notes: "At sometime the original font had been removed to the churchyard, and later to Thornbury Castle, and replaced by one 'in the Grecian style' which was put in the middle aisle. At the restoration of 18[8]5 the original was returned and reinstated only to be destroyed in the fire 12 years later [October 31, 1897], the present one is an exact replica from measurements and photographs. The 'Grecian' font was given to the Cathedral of Suva, in the Fiji Islands, where it is still in use" [the web site quotes "Church information sheet" as source].
