There are three entries for this Denton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP8357/denton/] [accessed 23 July 2014], but they mention neither church nor priest in them. The Victoria County History (Northampton, vol. 4, 1937) notes: "The building has been very much altered in modern times and little ancient work remains. [...] The tower arch springs from moulded corbels of the same period; all of which implies a reconstruction in the 14th century of a 13thcentury structure [...] The font is of cylindrical type, 16 in. high, covered with a sunk geometrical pattern, and stands on a tall moulded base of later date. The bowl may be ancient, but it has no lead lining and is spoiled by paint." Noted in Pevsner (1973): "Circular with bold, coarse, large cross patterns. What is the date?". Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2008): "the font [i.e., the basin] may, at a pinch, be 12thc., but is more probably 13thc." Composite baptismal font consisting of a goblet-shaped basin decorated with a shallow-carved pattern that can be read as large crosses or geometrical panels, mounted on an octagonal moulded base of a later, probably 15th-century period. The font is completely covered in hedious gray paint. The moulded wooden cover appears modern.
